9 Fun Facts For Kids About U.S. President Barack Obama

Barack Obama as you all know is the first African American president of the United States of America. On November 6, 2012 he was elected for a second term as president when he defeated Republican Matt Romney. Here are 10 fun facts on Barack Obama for kids to know about his achievements, choices etc. and other trivia.

#1   He is the first American president to have been born in Hawaii. Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

#2   Barack Obama is a bi-racial. His father Barack Obama, Sr. was from Kenya while his mother Ann Dunham was of mostly English ancestry. “My father was black as pitch, my mother white as milk” – Barack Obama.

#3   Besides English Obama speaks some basic Indonesian which he learned during his childhood years at Jakarta. During that time he also ate dog meat, snake meat and roasted grasshopper.

#4   Barack Obama used to take marijuana and cocaine during his teenage years. He now considers it a mistake and says that he is not proud of it. #5   Barack Obama is a graduate of Harvard Law School. In his second year he was elected as the president of the journal, Harvard Law Review. His election gained much media attention as he was the first black president of the journal.

#6    For 12 years from 1992 to 2004, Barack Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He won a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Spoken Word Recording. It was for the audio version of his memoir, Dreams from My Father.

In December 2009, Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people”. #7    In May 2012 Obama became the first U.S. President to publicly support legalizing same sex marriage.
