Under The Lens: Honey Ants

Honey ants, also known as repletes, are ants which are stuffed with food by the worker ants and then they are used to provide nourishment to them in times of scarcity of food.

Some insects like honey bees or wasps store their food in combs or within their nest to get them through scarcer times. But honey ants are unique in using their own body as living storage. Repletes have swollen abdomens due to the food stored in them. In some parts of the world they are eaten by people and considered a delicacy.
